This standard is a guide identifying in chart form the principal uses of road asphalt materials and listing definitions of terms used to describe road asphalt materials and their applications.

The purpose of this standard is to assist road designers and material specifiers in the selection and specification of common road asphalt materials for new roads and the repair of old roads.

Additional information that may affect the selection and use of road asphalt materials is contained in the standards listed in par. 2.1.1.

This standard does not cover the uses of specialized materials such as foamed asphalt, rubberized asphalt, asbestos-modified asphalt, sulphur asphalt, etc.
